Title |
Fragment of an ingot of copper alloy |
||
Description |
English: A lump of solidified molton copper. It has a flat base and a domed top. It has been cut on two, opposite sides; one is a straighter, clean cut; and there is evidence of sooting to three sides. The object is 32.8mm long, 20.5mmwide and 17.8mm thick. It weighs 47.71gms.
This was part of either a small ingot or a lump of molton copper formed in something like a crucible. It was probably carried in this form from elsewhere as travelling metal workers and traders would often carry lumps of metal around for forming on the site where objects were needed. It's lack of distincive form makes it hard to give an accurate date, it could date from the Bronze Age to Post medieval periods. Although is probably from the Roman period onwards. |
