Fragment of an Early Saxon cruciform brooch
Description
English: Fragment of an unusual gilt copper alloy cruciform brooch (extant width 35.5mm, extant length 28mm, weight 11.45g), head-plate, upper edge broken, both wings broken, one across the remains of two perforations, the other also with two perforations, both containing the corroded remains of an iron rivet and retaining a scrap of silver applique sheet on the face. Sub-triangular or trefoil-shaped stamps with twin-barred points or foils and a central pellet border the sides of the central panel. Cracked above the junction with the rectangular panel on the surviving stump of the missing bow. There are the remains of a single lug on the reverse, broken across the perforation containing a fragment of iron pin. All breaks ancient. c. AD 480-530.
