Fragment of Early Saxon sword scabbard chape
Description
English: Fragment of Early Saxon copper alloy sword scabbard chape, cast-in one, front part missing, fully round globular terminal. The back-plate, which has a vertical median arris on its face, and is pierced by a rivet-hole containing the remains of a corroded iron rivet near its pointed top. Length 28.5mm. Width 6mm. Thickness 9mm. Cf. examples from Burnham Thorpe (HER32340, Gurney, D. Norfolk Archaeol. 44 (2004), 743, fig. 6 A), the Isle of Wight (PAS IOW-C1B525, with comments by Barry Ager) and Thetford (HER 24822, Andrews, P. East Anglian Archaeol. 72, fig.67 no.25). Possibly of Frankish origin. Late 5th - early 6th century.
