Grace. I well remember a largedog that one of my fathers parishioners once possessed.I do think he was the kindest animal I ever met. When anyone came to the house he would run tomeet them and hold up a paw to shake hands. Hismaster had a beautiful colt that died when it was ayear old, and it was dragged away off to a wood.Bounce w^atched the proceedings with seeminglymuch solemnity, nor would he leave the dead bodyuntil he was compelled by hunger to return to thehouse. He had been home but a short time whenthe whole sky off in the direction of the wood becameblack with turkey-buzzards. Bounce pricked up hisears and barked furiously, but being unable to getany one interested in the colts fate, he rushed backto the wood and drove all the buzzards away. Inthis way he kept guard over the poor colts bodyuntil its bones were bleaching in the sun. Indeed, Icould not help crying over his tender faithfulness.Bounce deserved a gold medal if he only could haveappreciated it, dont you think so ?

Diamond and Pearl. THE SECOND LESSON—Canis-famUiaris. The children assented with one voice. Now, said Grace— Please, cousin, interrupted Frank, I want toask how long dogs live ? From fifteen to twenty years—but seldom so long. They are born with their eyes shut, the same as kit-tens. About the tenth day they get them open, andreach their full growth at the close of the secondyear. It is said that if brandy be given to puppiesthey will never attain perfect growth, but remain in adwarfed state. I knew a little boy that tried this ex-periment on two baby dogs, and he succeeded just sofar as to kill them, no farther. It is very wicked tomake any such unnatural experiments. Now let ussee what we have learned about dogs. Frank and May began in concert: Dogs belongto the branch Vertebrata; class—Mammalia; order—Carniverous^ Megasthenes, belonging to the largerand more powerful animals. Genus—Canis, the Latinword for dog. Species—Canis-familiarisr I guess somebody has been studyi
