He went to the swamp after a loadof wood. Meantime the children out in the garden were nib-bling at their rusks. Suddenly May caught little Rose by the hand,protectingly. Hark, Frank, whats that ? What ? asked Frank. Why, something rubbing against the other sideof the fence ! And very cautiously May and Rosepeeped over the fence. Just the lovelies little talves ! cried Rose. Poh! theyre deer, said Frank, as he too,looked over. Deer ? said May. Why, deers have great bighorns. The females dont. Thats a female over therewith her two little ones. I thought deers were great, big things. Well, so they are, sometimes, said Frank, look-ing perplexed, in spite of himself. Lets go and ask Cousin Grace and Mr. Dumas.And away the children ran. I 152

Deer. AN OLD-FASHIONED VISIT. And why do you think they are not deer ? asked Grace. Well, said Frank, in the first place they arenot large enough, and none of them have horns ;and then there are two little ones, and I think thereought to be but one. Let me see, said Mr. Dumas. The fallowdeer is not nearly so large as the red deer; and thenthere is the little roebuck which weighs only aboutsixty pounds; yet it is not likely to be that since itis always a dangerous pet. The fallow deer wasoriginally a native of Persia, from whence it wasbrought to England, where it is now thoroughlydomesticated. It is very gentle in disposition andeasily tamed. It is a dark bay color above, whitebeneath and on the inside of the limbs and underthe tail. The one out there hasnt a sign of a tail, criedMay, triumphantly. So you see, Master Frank, itisnt a deer. Not a fallow deer, perhaps, smiled Mr. Dumas. But it may be a roebuck. He is only about twofeet and a half high. In summer his hair is short 155 AN
