askedGrace. O, I knowd tause its in my picture-book. Sit in my lap, Rosie, dear, and hear this story. Once upon a time two pretty, graceful littlecreatures with the blackest of black eyes, and carry-ing their soft, fine brushes over their backs — justsuch little creatures as Rosie saw to-day out in theorchard — were seeking around for a home. Then the little things busiedthemselves for several days in filling their tinypantries with nuts and acorns — not to eat so longas they could pick up their living in the woods —but for times of scarcity, prudent little squirrel-peo-ple that they were. When all the cupboards werefilled, they dug places in the ground close to theroots of the trees as little cellars ; and when thesewere full then they seemed to know they were safefrom want for the long winter, I saw a great num-ber of chestnuts that were dug out of one of thesecellars early in the spring. Every one was sprouted, and a littl
