Cette forteresse a été érigée par les colons espagnols au 16 ème siècle à Santo-Domingo, quartier colonial. Les insurgés ont défaits la garnison haïtienne stationnée dans la ville en février 1844 et proclame le 27 février 1844 l'indépendance de la République Dominicaine.
