Fort Perch Rock

Summary

[edit]
Description Fort Perch Rock. Completed in 1829, built at the same time as the lighthouse, the Fort was constructed to protect the Port of Liverpool from marine attack and cost the grand sum of £26,965 pounds 0 shillings and 8 pence, £100 less than expected, according to the foundation stone still visible at the fort. Cut off from the land at high tide, the fort stands 40 feet tall at its highest points with walls having been extensively remodelled from their original maximum of 29 feet high to 32 feet on the seaward side. The eighteen guns fort contained barracks for one hundred men, with officer's quarters, kitchens, and a sunken magazine to house gunpowder and shot. The guns were only ever fired twice, at the start of the two world wars. In both cases, warning shots were fired to dissuade errant ships from entering the Port. The fort ceased military operations in 1954, and was sold in 1959, it is now a museum.
