Notes

This is one of the water-colour drawings made by Georg Forster during James Cook's second voyage to the Pacific in 1772-1775.

The watercolour is listed by Sharpe 1906, p. 183 and by Lysaght 1959 p. 288 as Plate 65. This is the number written on the right-hand side of the watercolour. The NHM lists this watercolour as Plate 268.

John Latham based his description of the "painted goose" on this picture by Forster.(Latham, 1785, p. 443).

The watercolour was painted in 1773 at the Cape of Good Hope and is the holotype for the species.(Lysaght 1959, p. 288)
