NORFOLK (March 15, 2013) Former U.S. Sen. John Warner, his wife, Jeanne, and guests tour the Hampton Roads Naval Museum and the Battleship Wisconsin. Warner is in Hampton Roads for the keel laying ceremony for the Virginia-class attack submarine Pre-Commissioning Unit (PCU) John Warner (SSN 785). PCU John Warner is named in his honor for a lifetime of service to the Navy and the nation. Warner was appointed undersecretary of the Navy in February 1969. Later, Warner represented the Commonwealth of Virginia in the U.S. Senate from 1979 to 2009, where he was a leader in national defense issues, serving continuously on the Senate Committee on Armed Services. He held leadership roles as chairman or ranking member for half of his tenure on this committee and also served many years on the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence. During the last year of World War II he served in the Navy as a petty officer third class. He also served in the Marine Corps during the Korean War as a lieutenant. PCU John Warner is under construction at Newport News Shipbuilding.
