Summary

[edit]
Description

Former School Board Offices, Calverley Street, Leeds. This Grade II* listed building was designed by George Corson, and built 1878-84, although the date 1880 is carved on it, and it was opened for use in 1881.

Matthew Taylor created the two sculptures of a schoolboy and schoolgirl in the entrance archway, and Benjamin Payler executed all the other stone carving. There are dragons (or perhaps fantastical sea horses) hidden in many of the spandrels and friezes carved above the ground floor windows.
