Summary
[edit]DescriptionFormer County Sessions Court and Wellington Column - geograph.org.uk - 147175.jpg |
English: Former County Sessions Court and Wellington Column. Now part of the National Museums and Galleries on Merseyside, the County Sessions House was designed by F. & G. Holme and built 1882-4. Its bold central portico carried on four pairs of Corinthian columns, continues the classical theme of William Brown Street and also completes the vista to the north end east end of St George's Plateau. The 40m Wellington Column, between the Walker Art Gallery and St George's Hall, was designed by Messrs Lawson of Glasgow and erected 1861-3. The Iron Duke stands on a fluted Doric column on a pedestal which records his battles. |
