| Description |
English: Fontaine à quatre jets avec bassin octogonal en niche blanche et obélisque central de marbre. Œuvre de Joseph Abeille, 1711. l'obélisque est posé sur quatre boules et se compose de cinq blocs de marbre verdâtre surmontés d’une boule et de quatre guirlandes de bronze. Billon, sur son plan de 1726, figure un bassin allongé et non octogonal!
Il est donc difficile d'affirmer que le bassin actuel remonte à 1711. Les deux petits bassins qui flanquent la fontaine ou été placés en 1977, mais l'origine d’un bassin secondaire remonte sans doute a l'année 1750, où une demande fut faite pour un abreuvoir. Au XIX siècle, la fontaine était en mauvais état et son histoire est très compliquée. Proposition est faite de la changer des 1841, tandis qu’en 1848 on se propose d'y installer la statue du David de Chaponnière. En 1849, un concours fut lancé par l'Administration municipale, tandis que James Pradier faisait la proposition d’offrir une fontaine monumentale à la Ville sur le thème de Polyphème surprenant Acis et Galathée. La fontaine a été plusieurs fols déplacée. Classée en 1921. La première mention d'une fontaine au Molard remonte à l’année 1451." Sources : Livre "Les fontaines de Genève" de Armand Brulhart |
