Description At Sumburgh Head Lighthouse. The Fog Horn was installed at the Lighthouse in 1905 and was used until 1987. The Sumburgh Head radar facility went into operation on 27th December 1939. as Admiralty Experimental Station Number 1 (AES1), tasked with plotting surfaced U-boats attempting to escape from the North Sea into the North Atlantic. it played a pivotal role in prventing an attack on Scapa Flow in April 1940.
