rity of heartthere will be simplicity of character; ifthere be genuine simplicity it must springfrom inward purity. This union of thetwo is well typified by the crest, a sprigof the phlox, in bloom, which is the re-presentative of unanimity. We know not L 146 FLOWERS AND HERALDRY. why it has been thus appropriated; butsince its name signifies a flame, or evena bright flaming fire, and since fire hasthe property of reducing all things totheir prime elements, and thus bringinginto reunion all particles which have anative afl&nity, its operation tends to arrangewhatever it acts upon in positions of thegreatest harmony, and therefore to pro-duce unanimity. Hence it seems that theflower which is named phlox may fitlybe used to denote that harmony andunanimity which is the general result ofa combination of perfect purity and genuinesimplicity, whence the heraldic combina-tion of their floral emblems expresses infloral language this union in the motto,—Purity and simplicity. ?:iate,XlI
