Welcome to our Veldkos Garden. The Cape Floral Kingdom, one of the six Plant Kingdoms in the world, is globally recognised for its beauty and diversity. People often don't realize that these sometimes insignificant, most often beautiful indigenous plants are worthy of getting to know and conserving. Their healing qualities are well-documented and we have tried to show examples of the more common medicinal and edible plants. Please remember that caution should be exercised as many are poisonous. Indigenous planting should be encouraged as the removal and destruction of our natural vegetation promotes water and wind erosion and invasive alien vegetation. Knowledge of the usefulness of these indigenous plants is the key to the appreciation and conservation of our Flora. This Hout Bay Museum garden is proof that these herbs and berries are easy to cultivate; in this way the public can be encouraged to grow these useful and interesting plants themselves and not remove them from the veld. Welkom by ons Veldkostuin. Die Kaapse blommeryk, een van ses Plantkoninkryke in die wêreld, word wêreldwyd erken vir die skoonheid en diversiteit daarvan. Mense besef dikwels nie dat die soms onbeduidende, meestal pragtige inheemse plante dit waardig is om te leer ken en te bewaar nie. Hul genesende eienskappe is goed gedokumenteer en ons het probeer om voorbeelde van die meer algemene medisinale en eetbare plante te wys. Onthou tog om versigtigheid aan die dag te lê aangesien etlike daarvan giftig is. Inheemse aanplantings moet aangemoedig word aangesien die verwydering en vernietiging van ons natuurlike plantegroei water- en winderosie en indringerplante bevorder. Kennis van die nut van hierdie inheemse plante is die sleutel tot die waardering en bewaring van ons flora. Dié Houtbaai-museumtuin is ’n bewys dat hierdie kruie en bessies maklik is om te verbou, en so kan die publiek aangemoedig word om hierdie nuttige en interessante plante self te kweek en nie uit die veld te verwyder nie. Sodra hulle gevestig is, benodig hulle ook minder water as dorstige eksotiese plante. Alle veldblomme geniet beskerming. |
