Description
English: A description board at Hout Bay Museum about flora
Welcome to our Veldkos Garden. The Cape Floral Kingdom, one of the six Plant Kingdoms in the world, is globally recognised for its beauty and diversity. People often don't realize that these sometimes insignificant, most often beautiful indigenous plants are worthy of getting to know and conserving. Their healing qualities are well-documented and we have tried to show examples of the more common medicinal and edible plants. Please remember that caution should be exercised as many are poisonous.
Indigenous planting should be encouraged as the removal and destruction of our natural vegetation promotes water and wind erosion and invasive alien vegetation. Knowledge of the usefulness of these indigenous plants is the key to the appreciation and conservation of our Flora.
This Hout Bay Museum garden is proof that these herbs and berries are easy to cultivate; in this way the public can be encouraged to grow these useful and interesting plants themselves and not remove them from the veld. Once established they also require less water than thirsty exotic plants.
 All wild flowers are protected.
Afrikaans: 'n Inligtingbord by Houtbaai-museum oor flora
Welkom by ons Veldkostuin.
