Description

Metro Gold Line was extended through East Los Angeles in early 2010. It is a light rail line that shares right-of-way with vehicular traffic, and is controlled by traffic signals (the signal with vertical white bar is for the train). Red light cameras ensure strict enforcement and help prevent vehicular collisions.

The original plans had called for the Red Line subway to be extended here, but after the initial Red Line was plagued with cost overruns and construction hardships, the planned subway was replaced with the light rail. It runs along Third Street, Indiana Street, and First Street to Little Tokyo before entering Union Station to join the existing Gold Line to Pasadena. This working-class neighborhood had been underserved by mass transit until the opening of this line.
