Summary
[edit]DescriptionFlickr - brewbooks - Madagascar - The Flora.jpg |
Madagascar - The Flora Located off the south-east coast of Africa is Madagascar, the worlds fourth largest island covering an area 587,041 sq km. It posseses a unique, but threatened flora with ancient Gondwanan links to plants found in Australia. Approximately 6% of the flora on the island is found only in Madagascar. Examples includes members of the cactus-like Didieraceae family, on display here. There are many more different types of palms in Madagascar (over 100) than in the whole of Africa. Thirteen of the 18 Madagascar palm genera are cousins of the Arecacae palm tribe, a group absent in nearby Africa but occurring in Asia and Australia: a Gondwanan link. Madagascar and Australia also share a number of similar plant genera that include Nepenthes (pitcher plants), Hibbertia, Acacia (wattles), Adansonia (baobabs), and Cassurina (sheoaks). However, this Gondwanian evolutionary heritage accounts for only 3% of Madagascaran flora. i040707 080 |
