ARABIAN SEA (Aug. 14, 2012) Vice Chief of Naval Operations visits USS Ponce Vice Chief of Naval Operations (VCNO) Adm. Mark Ferguson speaks with Sailors assigned to the Afloat Forward Staging Base (Interim) USS Ponce (AFSB 15) in the combat direction center. Ponce, formerly designated as an amphibious transport dock (LPD), was converted and reclassified as an AFSB(I) in April to fulfill a long-standing U.S. Central Command request for an AFSB to be located in its area of responsibility. Ferguson is visiting deployed Sailors and leadership in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations to thank Navy personnel and to demonstrate the continued commitment to regional partners.
