| Description |
Abandoned lime kiln, Johnsonburg Swamp Preserve, Warren County. Many years ago, farmers took advantage of the area's limestone-rich soil by burning the limestone in the kilns and spreading the ash, or quicklime, as fertilizer. Machines have long since replaced lime kilns; however, many of these relics survive in the dense forests that have reclaimed much of the farmland. The Nature Conservancy owns and manages the preserve. |
