Uniform white grave markers are aligned in a curving row in an area of turf around a white flagstaff.

The design for Fort Donelson National Cemetery began soon after the Civil War, in the late 1860s. Grave markers were laid out in a heart-shaped design surrounding the flagstaff on the east side of the cemetery, and this pattern is still evident today. This painted iron flagstaff replaced the original wooden staff, which was struck by lightning in 1907.
