Notes | The painting shows the locks of the Rideau Canal, the Barracks Hill promontory (which would be become Parliament Hill) containing three stone barracks and a hospital, and John By's private residence on the opposite hill (the site of the future Major's Hill Park). A wharf and a building occupied by the Royal Engineers is located below the By residence, on the bank of the Ottawa River. The Commissariat is located to the right of the locks (the building still stands and serves as the Bytown Museum). | |||||||||||||||||||||||
