Description |
English: The Belltown area of Seattle was named for William Bell, one of Seattle's first settlers. At first, this mainly residential area was almost completely separated from the downtown area by Denny Hill. By 1911, part of Denny Hill had been removed and a big fire had destroyed many of the homes and small businesses. These were replaced by hotels and other commercial buildings.
This photo, probably taken in 1915, shows the view south from Battery Street along First Avenue after the Belltown fire and the regrading project. Part of the domed wooden Bell Hotel (left) stands next door to the ornate brick Austin A. Bell Building (center).
