Summary
[edit]DescriptionFires and smoke across central Siberia (MODIS 2017-08-16).jpg |
English: Smoke curled over the taiga over central Siberia in mid-August 2017. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Terra satellite acquired this true-color image on August 13.
The image is centered on the Sakha Republic, where dozens of red hotspots mark actively burning fires. Smoke rises from the hotspots and swirls high in the atmosphere, obscuring much of the region from view. According to Global Forest Watch Fires, during the week of August 7 – 14 there were over 150,000 fire alerts across Russia. The heaviest concentration occurred in the Sakha Republic (73,487), Krasnoyarsk Krai (33,850) and Irkutsk (30,964). All are located in central Siberia. |
