Description
English: Many dozens of wildfires were burning in the foothills of the Himalaya Mountains on May 29, 2019, filling the valleys and surrounding area with thick smoke. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of the smoky scene. The wildfire season in this part of India (located in the west) and Nepal typically begins in November and peaks in mid-April although wildfire lingers until the start of the monsoon. Due to very hot, very dry conditions this year, the month of May has brought a record-setting number of fires to Nepal. According to the Kathmandu Post, from May 1 to May 19 more than 14,600 incidents of wildfire were reported across the country—with at least four of those days reporting at least 1,000 new fires each day. The extensive wildfires threaten forest recovery efforts as well as the biodiversity of the region. The fires, which are difficult to control due to the terrain and limited firefighting resources, also put human life and health at risk.
