| Description |
This aircraft, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner sustained substantial damage in a ground fire while parked at London-Heathrow Airport. The airplane had arrived from Addis Ababa in the morning of 12 July 2013 and after passengers and crew had left the aircraft it was parked, unattended, as it wasn't going to be used again until later in the evening. At approximately at 16:34 an employee in the air traffic control tower noticed smoke coming from the aircraft and sounded the fire alarm. As chance would have it the aircraft was parked next to the airport fire station and they arrived one minute after the alarm. They had some difficulty locating the source of the fire but managed to put it out. The fire had started in a lithium-metal battery and significant damage was caused to the composite structure of the aircraft. Repairs took until December '13 to be completed and the aircraft sat forlornly meantime. My photo was taken after it had returned into service, back at Heathrow, and not far from where it had been on fire. |
