Les fermes traditionnelles de la Forêt-Noire Centrale sont des fermes-maisons. En effet, les espaces de vie et de travail sont réunis dans le même bâtiment constitué de plusieurs étages en contrebas de l’ entrée principale qui est située à l’ arrière de la ferme, du côté versant de la montagne. Le rez-de-chaussée est constitué d’ une cave, le premier étage est partagé en une partie de vie (séjour, cuisine) et l’ étable (accès sur le côté), le second étage est dédié aux chambres et à des lieux de travail (ateliers, entrepôts du bois). Le dernier étage, accessible par l’ entrée depuis le versant , est destiné à la conservation du fourrage, c’ est le grenier. Les fermes-maisons ont généralement trois étages. La toiture de ces fermes est très caractéristique. Elle est formée par deux longs-pans et par deux autres pans à ses extrémités mais qui descendent nettement moins bas. Ces deux derniers pans sont appelés des « demi-croupes » (lorsque les pans d’ extrémité descendent au même niveau que les longs-pans, ils portent le nom de « croupe »). La toiture des fermes-maisons de la Forêt-Noire Centrale est dessinée de façon à permettre une protection contre la neige, le vent et le soleil.
