Featherstone Park Station

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Featherstone Park Station
The station on the former Alston Branch Line was on the north side of a level crossing on the road between the hamlet of Featherstone Rowfoot and Featherstone Castle. It was originally named simply Featherstone, becoming Featherstone Park in 1902. Most of the passengers using the station worked at Featherstone Colliery to the south which was served by an inclined plane to sidings between Featherstone Park and Coanwood. During World War I the station served a military camp in the grounds of Featherstone Castle, this being reused in World War II for prisoners of war NY6760 : Cell block, POW Camp 18. The station later became a halt and was used to park the royal train when King George VI visited Tyneside. In 1954 goods traffic ceased, and the station became unstaffed. The two-storey, stone-built station house survives as a private residence.
