Summary
[edit]DescriptionFavositid coral in fossiliferous limestone (Columbus Limestone, Middle Devonian; Olentangy Indian Caverns, central Ohio, USA) 1 (30451051903).jpg |
Olentangy Indian Caverns is located west of the town of Lewis Center, in southern Delaware County, central Ohio, USA. It is a relatively small limestone cave, developed in the Middle Devonian Columbus Limestone, which is part of a widespread shallow marine carbonate succession in eastern and midwestern America. The lower part of the overlying unit - thin-bedded limestones of the Middle Devonian Delaware Limestone - is exposed along the entrance stairs. The object at the center of the photo is a fossil favositid coral (Animalia, Cnidaria, Anthozoa, Tabulata, Favositidae), commonly known as the honeycomb corals. The coral's original calcium carbonate skeleton has been silicified - it is now quartz. Quartz is resistant to dissolution, so the silicified fossil erodes more slowly than the limestone matrix and it ends up projecting slightly from the cave wall. The greenish coloration is from algae growing in tourist trail lights (= not natural to the cave). |
