Over-fishing and the incursion of the trout havebeen mentioned as probable causes, butneither factor could possibly have producedthe present state of things. The streamshave since been stocked with brook andrainbow trout, and efforts are being madeto introduce the Montana grayling. In Montana In Montana the grayling is restricted to tributaries of the Missouri River above theGreat Falls, except where recently planted.Until within the past few years it inhabitedonly the three forks of the Missouri—theGallatin, Madison and Jefferson rivers andtributaries—and Smith River and tributa-ries below the three forks. It is still abun-dant in these waters and lives in amity, asit has done for all time, with the red-throattrout and Rocky Mountain whitefish. That the grayling should inhabit only thewidely separated regions of Alaska, Michi-gan and Montana is remarkable. The Arc- 50
