Summary
[edit]DescriptionFaules-Feld Argon-Pedion Arcadia Peloponnese.jpg |
English: Southend of the closed Karst basin „Nestani-Saga-Polje“ in the Arcadien highland, Peloponnese Greece. In this part of the basin, „Argon Pedion“ (Greek for “untilled plain”, see also „Description of Greece“ by the ancient author Pausanias, 110-180 AD) sheep- and goat keeping dominate. Extraordinary winter rains flood this basin section even today, retarding any possibility of cultivation. The mass of water, which may form a temporary lake can only be drained subsurface by one single ponor, (Greek: καταβόθρα). The section of the slope immediately above the plain resembles abandoned terraced cultivation. Such active cultivation is recorded for the northern part. Animal path destruction is also (partly) visible but too limited to contradict the slopes character. |
