Summary

[edit]
Description A far view of one of the locks on the Rideau Canal in Ottawa, Canada. A lock is a device used for raising and lowering boats, ships and other watercraft between stretches of water of different levels on river and canal waterways. Locks are used to make a river more easily navigable, or to allow a canal to take a reasonably direct line across land that is not level. Locks are built in places where the level of the water in the river or canal suddenly changes. This may be because there is a waterfall there, or because a dam or a weir has been built, or because there is some other thing in the way. (Ottawa, Canada, June 2015)
