THIS BROUGHT THE INSTRU-MENT WITHIX ABOUT SIX FEET OF THE HOLE IX THE OPPOSITE TREE THE MOURNING DOVE (Zenaidura macroura) OF the thirteen species of the familyColumbidse found in North Americathe mourning dove is much the mostcommon and widely distributed. In its deli-cate brown coloring, graceful body, and taper-ing tail it resembles its larger relative, the nowextinct passenger pigeon. Because of itshabit of nesting in isolated pairs, as well as itsnatural wariness, it is able to survive and flour-ish in populated regions where well protected,often nesting within town limits. In winterit is more gregarious, gathering in small flocksand frequently feeding around farm houses.Its low mournful cooing lends enchantmentto the woods at evening.
