My past expectations have been so con-tinually disappointed, that I am unable to place any dependenceupon what at present appears favourable in my future prospects.Indeed, the more I think of the future, the more I am inclined to 200 WILLIAM GODWIN, despair: I believe I can never enjoy any kind of happiness orcomfort until I shall have some kind of respectable settlement inlife, and to obtain this requires exertions which, broken-spiritedand broken-hearted as I am, are perfectly impracticable.* Mrs Godwin has noted on the letter, from which the lastextract is taken, that it was soon followed by a note fromthe College Tutor, informing Mr Godwin that Patricksonhad shot himself on the following day, Aug. loth. Norecord of the event is to be found in the College books, butthe Bedmaker, who attended the unfortunate young man,died only a few years ago, and the event is still remem-bered as a tradition at Emxmanuel.

CHAPTER VIII. THE SHELLEY S, i 8 i i — i 8 i 4. The intimacy with Shelley, which also was not of God-wins seeking, was destined to have a far more abidinginfluence on the lives of both. The first notice of Shelleyin the Godwin Diaries is under date Jan. 6, 1811. * Writeto Shelly. It is the only time his name is so spelt, his letterwas in answer to Shelleys first letter, in which he introducedhimself, and was written at once, when he was not quiteclear about the name of his correspondent. Shelley was at this time living at Keswick, in the earlierand happier days of his marriage with Harriet Westbrook,and his eager and restless spirit prompted him to form theacquaintance, by letter, with others whom he believed tobe like himself enthusiasts in the cause of humanity, ofliberty, and progress.
