Description
English: A FOLDABLE SOLAR POWER unit that is sized to fit in a standard radio backpack is being developed by the Army’s Mobility Equipment Research and Development Command (MERADCOM) to reduce the logistics involved with battery-powered combat communications and navigation equipment.

MERADCOM is developing photovoltaic solar systems for use by all the military services. The unit, which weighs three and one-half pounds, can be used to recharge the 12- and 24-volt batteries used in radios and other electronic equipment. In full sunlight, the unit produces 24 volts at .8 ampere, and 12 volts at 1.6 amperes.

A high power density of 10 watts per square foot is achieved by the use of rectangular silicon solar cells closely spaced edge-to-edge on a honeycomb aluminum panel. Protected by a thin layer of transparent encapsulant, the cells are waterproof and are capable of operating in temperatures ranging from 40 degrees below zero to 140 degrees above zero Fahrenheit.
