Description

First Day Cover (FDC) of "Postverk Føroya"; 2016; FDC to the stamp series "Historical Fire Machines", that's meaning the stamps Michel No. 848, 849, 850 from . The motive of the first stamp (Michel No. 848, 1 FKR) shows the first fire pump on the Faroe Islands. This pump was built in 1776 (repaired in Denmark 1819) and was purchased because the growing of the town Torshavn forced to better possibilities of fire fighting. To the then time it has given no water pipelines, nor hydrants or tanks or similarly. The water must be transported by buckets with human chains from the Sea or the shores of little island brooks. The second stamp (Michel No. 849, 15 FKR) of this series shows the first fire extinguishing automobile of the type "Bredford K" from England which was come to the Faroes Islands in 1948 (1937 built) with a 500 m fire hose. The third stamp (Michel No. 850, 19 FKR) is showing also a fire automobil of the type "Bredford", additional equipped with a 20 m - sliding ladder and a 1,500 liters water tank which was came in the year 1962 to the Faroe Islands. All stamps were postmarked with a round lineless first-day special cancellation from Tórshavn, and a logo of the 1933 founded "Tórshavnar sløkkilð" (= "Torshavn Fire Brigade") as central motive.
