Summary

[edit]
Description A U.S. Navy Douglas F4D-1 Skyray (probably BuNo 134830) on the port catapult of the aircraft carrier USS Intrepid (CVA-11) during "Operation Crosswind" in December 1957. Operating out of Norfolk, Virginia (USA), Intrepid conducted "Operation Crosswind", a study of the effects of wind on carrier launches. It was proven that carriers could safely conduct flight operations without turning into the wind and even launch planes while steaming downwind.
