Description
Magyar: Az ispán (latinul: comes) legismertebb jelentésében a vármegye király által kinevezett első emberét jelentette a középkorban, az újkorban (kb. 1526 után) a tisztség neve főispán (latinul: comes supremus) lett. A Magyar Királyságban a középkortól és a Magyar Köztársaság idején a kommunista rendszer megjelenéséig (1950-es törvényig) leggyakrabban az egy-egy megye, vagy szabad királyi város (törvényhatósági jogú város) élén álló, király, vagy kormány által kinevezett legfőbb méltóság, illetve hivatal volt.
