On najamais prouvé cependant quil y eut à cette époque desphénomènes volcaniques. Normalement le grauwacke à faciès ardôisier est dunecouleur grisâtre ou verdâtre, mais en certains endroits, ilil prend une teinte nettement rougeâtre. On ne trouvepas de grauwacke rouge dans le district minéralisé de Cobaltproprement dit, mais on en trouve des affleurements àlouest et à lest dans la moitié occidentale du canton deColeman, près de Latchford, sur la rivière Montréal et endeux ou trois points à peu de distance de la rive du lacTimiskaming. Le grauwacke, comme tous les autres termes de la sérieCobalt, est généralement horizontal. Habituellement le grauwacke passe à la partie supérieureà un quartzite plus ou moins impur qui fait place à sontour à un conglomérat, mais quelquefois le quartzite estabsent et le grauwacke passe directement au conglomérat.Dans les sections complètes de la série, comme par exempleen certains points des rives orientales du lac Timiskaming,le conglomérat semble passer sans discordance à ce quona appelé larkose et quartzite de Lorrain. Le quartziteest fréquememnt accompagné de bancs de matérieux cail-louteux. On connaît cependant deux ou trois localités où lestermes supérieurs de la série, conglomérats ou arkoses,reposent directement sur les grauwackes, sans passage parle quartzite.
