Commentaire historique:

L'abbé Louis-Toussaint Dassy (1808-1888), archéologue et historien, secrétaire perpétuel de l'Académie de Marseille, fut le fondateur, avec Marie Bouffier, de l'Institut des jeunes aveugles et sourds-muets de Marseille. Le monument commémoratif, commandé au sculpteur Falguière, fut élevé grâce à une souscription publique et inauguré le 12 juin 1892.
