Description
English: Ettringite, Oyelite
Locality: N'Chwaning Mines, Kuruman, Kalahari manganese fields, Northern Cape Province, South Africa (Locality at mindat.org)
Size: 6.4 x 4 x 2.8 cm.
A robust crystal of approximately 3.4 x 2 x 2 cm, sits snugly atop a soft oyelite-covered matrix. Little accent crystals are abundant on the surface, too, of this very 3-dimensional matrix piece. It exemplifies the qualities of this find: translucency, shimmering surface lustre, and unusual tapering form. It has a pastel lemon-yellow color. It is hard to explain or convey in pictures, but there is a certain ethereal quality to these specimens that makes the crystals look "soft" and unusual compared to most other large crystalline species.
