English: Petermann Etterlin, Kronica von der loblichen Eydtgnoschaft Jr harkommen und sust seltzam strittenn und geschichten. Basel, 1507, fol. 14r[1].
Woodcut by DS, probably by Daniel Schwegler, from Etterlin's Chronicle. The same woodcut is also shown on fol. 7r[2][3]. The background shows the original settlement of central Switzerland, previously an uninhabited wilderness, including the clearing of the forest, and the slaying of the dragon by Heinrich von Winkelried. The scene in the foreground is the original foundation of the Confederacy, with the three first confederates recruiting a fourth conspirator, the man of Altzellen who had slain the reeve of Unterwalden in the bath (in later tradition named Konrad Baumgarten). The moored boat on the right refers to the secret meeting-place on the Rütli (misprinted betlin for rütlin), which the confederates reached by boat during nighttime. The three confederates are dressed for war, in the style of the early 16th century, wearing half armour, one wearing a helmet and carrying a long pike, one wearing chainmail under the plate armour and carrying a battle axe. The new recruit is wearing rural dress and is armed with a basilard or Swiss degen, he has removed the cap and appears to be handed a book or document, possibly an allusion to the written pacts (Bundesbriefe) between the cantons. This is the first known depiction of the "Rütlischwur" scene, younger depictions, beginning with Münster (1544) and Stampfer (1546) show just the original three confederates.
