Maurice Denis (1870 - 1943), sensible aux expositions d'estampes japonaises, conservait chez lui une collection de plus de 70 pièces, dont des oeuvres d'Utamaro, Kiyoniga ou Kôrin, que l'on découvrait alors. Extrait du site du Musée Maurice Denis, St Germain en Laye

L'exposition des maîtres japonais organisée à l'école des beaux-arts à Paris du 25 avril au 22 mai 1890 par Siegfrid Bing, avec le soutien de nombreux collectionneurs, a révélé aux artistes français l'art des estampes japonaises mais aussi des livres illustrés et des kakemono (1100 oeuvres). Son impact a été considérable notamment sur les Nabis.
