Description

Escultura de homenagem aos pescadores de autoria do escultor Américo Gomes, na Avenida de Montevideu, realizada por encomenda de Henrique Galvão, Comissário da Exposição Colonial Portuguesa, durante a qual foi exposta em modelo de gesso obtendo grande sucesso junto do público.

Após a Exposição (que decorreu entre 16 de Junho e 30 de Setembro de 1934 nos Jardins do Palácio de Cristal), foi criada uma Comissão para o Levantamento na Foz do Douro da Escultura O Homem do Leme composta por várias personalidades a fim de patrocinarem a feitura em bronze da escultura, o que ocorreu em 1937, nas oficinas de Bernardino Inácio, decidindo a Câmara Municipal do Porto a sua colocação na Avenida de Montevideu em 1938.

O molde original em gesso foi entregue ao Museu Marítimo de Ílhavo. Refira-se ainda que tal escultura dá nome e simboliza a revista dos Lions Clube de Ílhavo. <a href="http://www.portoantigo.org/2010/05/homem-do-leme.html" rel="nofollow">www.portoantigo.org/2010/05/homem-do-leme.html</a>
