A rhizome is a mass of roots, which if separated into pieces, each piece may be able to give rise to a new plant. Gormly's rhizome is composed of headless and (maybe) one-legged bodies. It's been photographed -- point and shot -- countless times. It also captured my imagination since my point and shot times. But how do I transpose it into a photo to convey its meaning or, at least, focus the viewer on it? The runner, who seems one-legged, adds to the sensation that she escaped -- "given rise to a new plant" -- from the sculpture. Lisbon, Jan. 12, 2014.
