Français : Cet escalier se trouve à environ 1 kilomètre du camp de concentration de Mauthausen. Il était appelé "l'escalier de la mort". Il menait à la carrière où les détenus devaient travailler. Il est composé de 186 marches. Cet escalier n'est pas celui d'origine, il n'a été contruit qu'en été 1942. Dans les premières années du camp, (1938-1942), les marches étaient de grandeurs différentes. Certaines marches mesuraient un demi-mètre.
Les nazis s'amusaient à pousser les derniers rangs de détenus qui descendaient à coup de pied et de crosse, de sorte qu'ils entrainaient les autres devant dans leur chute. En fin de journée, les détenus devaient porter un lourd bloc de pierre, et ils devaient ensuite remonter les marches sous les coups. Certains ont trouvé la mort sur ces escaliers. |
