L'arazzo, un frammento di "entrefenetre" o colonna, era destinato ad essere posizionato tra due porte o finestre, in modo da ricoprire uno spazio stretto e lungo e rendere possibile così il paramento di un'intera stanza. Fa parte di una serie di sei arazzi, con analogo soggetto, tessuti per la ripresa seicentesca delle Storie di San Giovanni Battista. Risulta mutilato in alto già in un inventario del 1770, infatti negli altri cinque arazzi della sene, nella pare superiore, sono tessuti due putti che sorreggono lo stemma mediceo. Vi è raffigurata una colonna con alto basamento, decorato da un mascherone, su cui poggia un leone affiancato da due putti che lo trattengono. Sopra una testa di cherubino raccorda questa raffigurazione con la parte più alta dove, all'interno di uno specchio con cornice ovale, è raffigurato Ercole che combatte il leone Nemeo. È la prima delle dodici fatiche dell'eroe greco, noto per la sua forza prodigiosa. Ancora più in alto si nota la figura di un altro cherubino, parzialmente tagliata a seguito della mutilazione dell'arazzo. The tapestry, a fragment of an 'entrefenetre' or column, was intended to be placed between two doors or windows, so as to cover a long, narrow space and thus make it possible to wallpaper an entire room. It is part of a series of six tapestries, with similar subject matter, woven for the 17th century revival of the Stories of St. John the Baptist. It was already mutilated at the top in an inventory of 1770. In the other five tapestries of the sene, in the upper pare, two putti holding the Medici coat of arms are woven. It depicts a column with a high base, decorated with a mask, on which rests a lion flanked by two cherubs holding it. Above a cherub's head connects this depiction with the upper part where, inside a mirror with an oval frame, is depicted Hercules fighting the Nemean lion. This is the first of the twelve labours of the Greek hero, known for his prodigious strength. Further up is the figure of another cherub, partially cut off as a result of the mutilation of the tapestry. The theme of the Labours of Hercules is dear to Medici iconography due to the identification of Cosimo I de' Medici with the Greek hero by Giorgio Vasari. |
