Summary
[edit]DescriptionEpworth-Euclid United Methodist Church, University Circle, Cleveland, OH (28782462758).jpg | The Epworth-Euclid United Methodist Church, now known as University Circle United Methodist Church, is located at East 107th Street and Chester Avenue in Cleveland's University Circle, overlooking Wade Park. Constructed between 1926 and 1928, the neo-Gothic/Art Deco Fusion-style structure is one of the most notable places of worship in Cleveland, and is one of the most significant landmarks in the University Circle neighborhood. The building has gothic-style windows and gothic-inspired detailing, with an Art Deco form and massing, including a large and distinctive copper spire rising from an octagonal base, which has both Gothic and Art Deco-style detailing. Originally home to the combined Epworth-Euclid United Methodist congregation, formed by the 1919 merger of Epworth United Methodist Church and Euclid United Methodist Church, founded in 1889 and 1827, respectively, and moved to this site after the movement of their congregations eastward in the city during the early 20th Century, bringing them out from the shadow of the former First Methodist Church on Euclid Avenue in the Central neighborhood. The building has retained its status as a hub of activity over the years, and, in 2010, the Epworth-Euclid congregation combined with the First United Methodist Church congregation, creating the modern-day University Circle United Methodist congregation, which calls this structure home. |
