English: Eogingkoites sp. - fossil plant from the Triassic of North Carolina, USA. (American quarter for scale; NCSM 355, North Carolina State Museum of Natural History, Raleigh, North Carolina, USA)
The Newark Supergroup is a thick, geographically-widespread stratigraphic unit in eastern America. It is Late Triassic to Early Jurassic in age and represents sediments and some lava flows that filled up old rift valleys roughly paralleling the modern-day Eastern Seaboard of America. The rift basins formed in the Triassic when the ancient Pangaea supercontinent attempted to break apart, but failed. A successful breakup of Pangaea occurred during the Jurassic. Most of the basin-filling rocks are terrestrial redbeds - hematite-rich siliciclastic sedimentary rocks, such as conglomerate, sandstone, siltstone, and shale, deposited in nonmarine environments. Seen here is a fossil plant from the Newark Supergroup in North Carolina. This is Eogingkoites, a bennettitalean plant and a Late Triassic guide fossil. Despite the genus name, it is not a ginkgoalean. Eogingkoites has been reported from the Newark Supergroup of eastern America and the Chinle Formation of western America. Classification: Plantae, Cycadeoidophyta, Bennettitales Stratigraphy: Pekin Formation, Newark Supergroup, Upper Triassic Locality: Boren Clay Pit, near the town of Gulf, Chatham County, central North Carolina, USA Some info. from: Ash (1976) - The systematic position of Eogingkoites.
