Summary
[edit]DescriptionEntrance to the Icehouse on Bankhill, Berwick - geograph.org.uk - 1231193.jpg |
English: Entrance to the Icehouse on Bankhill, Berwick This is one of three surviving icehouses in Berwick (the others are behind Ravensdowne, and near Shoregate)- they are all about 200 years old. Tweed Salmon was packed in ice before shipped south. The ice was collected from local ponds and, if properly stored, could remain frozen for up to two years. In milder winters, ice would have to be purchased from Scandinavia. |
